Medium: The Chinese Military is a Paper Dragon

China’s military budget has grown by double-digits year after year, but inflation has eaten away at the increases. China’s army, navy, air force and missile command are wracked by corruption—and their weapons are, by and large, still greatly inferior to Western equivalents.

Medium: Fighting in Plain Sight—Impostors on the Battlefield

This Battle of the Bulge was a failure for Germany. The Allies tried and executed 18 German soldiers for their role in Operation Greif, many before the battle was even over. The soldiers were technically out of uniform and considered spies. Sneaking around and committing acts of sabotage didn’t help their legal defense.

Medium: Base Plan Puts American Troops on China’s Doorstep

Washington is keen to restore its Philippine stronghold but has moved carefully. Philippine law requires the senate to ratify base deals. To avoid contentious politics, the Americans want their new bases to be situated inside existing Philippine military facilities, where the ratification law does not apply. For this reason, the new U.S. outposts likely will be smaller than the superbases of the past.

Medium: Text 565 To Donate to the Ukrainian Military

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced Saturday its citizens can give to the armed forces using their cell phones. A call to the number 565 will automatically donate 5 hryvnia—$.51 American dollars—to Ukrainian national defense.

We’re not sure whether the number works for international calls from outside Ukraine.

Medium: Clock’s Ticking—Taiwan Could Resist a Chinese Invasion for Just One Month

Taiwan has had a long time to prepare for invasion—and its shows. Taipei’s fortified command center, concealed inside a hollowed-out mountain, compares favorably to America’s NORAD headquarters at Cheyenne Mountain. The Taiwanese air force has at least two underground air bases, including one inside Jiashan Mountain.

Its arsenal rusting, its economy in shambles and newly armed with atomic weapons, North Korea is developing a new kind of asymmetric army that doesn’t need to win a conventional conflict.

Medium: China’s Got a Supergun

The ZH-05 OICW is pattered on the original XM-29 design. The Chinese gun combines a 5.8-millimeter rifle and a 20-millimeter smart grenade launcher in an over-under configuration. The new weapon weighs just 10 pounds fully loaded—its low weight likely due to the launcher’s antiquated, but still effective, manual bolt action.

A 19th-century-style bolt action on a modern grenade launcher might seem like a technical weakness, but it’s actually a strength. The action is dead simple to use and has fewer parts that could break. Any loading system designed to be faster would also be heavier.

Medium: Air Sea Battle FAQ

Are we ready for Air Sea Battle?

Between the Navy, Air Force and Marines, the Pentagon already has most of the basic equipment. But China’s defenses get better every year—and could improve ever faster thanks in part to the looming threat of … Air Sea Battle. But we digress.

There are things the military would like to buy in order to do the job better. The Air Force wants more F-35 stealth fighter-bombers and the new, stealthy Long Range Strike Bomber, still on the drawing board. The Navy and Marines want more destroyers, submarines, P-8 patrol planes and drones that can launch from aircraft carriers.
